New, cheaper iPhone 5c confirmed for South Africa

MTN plans to offer the 8GB iPhone 5c in South Africa, a spokesperson for the operator has told MyBroadband.

Responding to questions about its plans for the device, MTN SA head of products & solutions Mike Fairon, said that the new iPhone 5c will be going through their testing processes to ensure that customers enjoy the full capabilities of the device.

“MTN will make the necessary announcements to media on availability and pricing once all relevant tests and quality checks have been done,” Fairon said.

The slightly cheaper 8GB iPhone 5c appeared on the Apple UK website on Tuesday, 18 March 2014 for £429 (incl. 20% VAT). The 16GB iPhone 5c is listed for £469 on the Apple UK site.

Similar to South Africa, the devices are sold network unlocked.

In South Africa the 16GB iPhone 5c sells for R8,999 through iStore Online.
