Office 2010 Beta now available

The new package features a number of updates from Microsoft’s most recent office package, Office 2007. In Office 2010 Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook each feature evolved and updated user interfaces based on the usage of tabs over traditional menu systems.

Word will offer a new ‘backstage view’ which will replace the previous File menu system with a more organised and easy to use visual representation. A sidebar with real time previews as well as minor photo and video editing tools have also been included.

PowerPoint will also feature a new ‘broadcast slideshow’ which will allow presentations to be shared to any connected PC through a ‘one click interface’.

What is arguably the biggest change in Office 2010 is the inclusion of Microsoft’s SkyDrive online storage system. Perhaps in a bid to better compete with Google Docs, Microsoft will offer 25GB of online storage space to each Office 2010 user. The service will also offer simultaneous grouped editing of documents online.

Microsoft has confirmed that two primary version of Office 2010 will be released next year. The ‘full version’ will have all of the updates and features included in the new package; pricing and release details have not yet been revealed.  The ‘starter version’ will have reduced functionality and is due to be preloaded as an OEM package on a number of desktop PCs and laptops in coming years.
