Windows 9 coming soon: report
Microsoft may announce the next version of Windows as early as 30 September 2014, with preview versions of the new operating system (codenamed “Threshold”) expected to become available at the same time or shortly thereafter, The Verge reports.
Citing sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans, The Verge said that the company is tentatively planning its press event for what is expected to be called Windows 9 for the end of September.
While this date may change, The Verge reported, preview versions of the Threshold release of Windows will be available on 30 September or shortly thereafter.
This is in-line with earlier reports on ZDNet citing “multiple sources who asked not to be named” that Microsoft would launch the technology preview of Windows Threshold by late September or early October.
According to previous “leaks”, the changes expected in the new release of Windows include:
- A new mini Start menu
- Windowed “Modern UI Style” (Metro) applications that can run on the desktop
- Virtual desktops
- The removal of the Charms bar
There is also talk of Cortana (Microsoft’s Siri-like personal assistant) making it into Threshold.
