Microsoft loses antitrust case

According to AP "The EU Court of First Instance said the Commission was correct in concluding that Microsoft was guilty of monopoly abuse in trying to use its power over desktop computers to muscle into server software."

In 2004 it was ruled that Microsoft abused its near monopoly position in the Operating System market to squeeze out rivals by bundling software like its media player with its Windows range of OSs.

It was slapped with a Euro 479-Million fine and told to change it business practices.

According to BBC “Microsoft has now been ordered to pay 80% of the Commission's legal costs, while the Commission has to carry a specific part of Microsoft's costs.”

This latest ruling may mean that Microsoft will have to play ‘more’ open cards when it comes to its source code, and the company will also have to rethink what software it bundles with its dominant Windows operating system.

Microsoft may appeal the latest ruling.
