Make it a date

Google Docs & Spreadsheets already offers a rudimentary alternative to Word and Excel. And Gmail and Google Calendar provide a compelling, Web-based alternative to Outlook. Best of all, unlike Office, it's all free. Syncing Gmail with mobile phones is already a snap – simply connect using Google's POP3 and SMTP servers. But syncing calendar entries has always proved impossible, meaning that running an electronic diary required Outlook. Well, no more.

Thanks to a third-party application called GooSync, syncing Google Calendar with a mobile phone is as easy as sending an SMS. Simply visit goosync.com, select your model of mobile phone and enter your phone number and your Google login. The site then sends you an SMS which instantly sets up your device to sync with Google's servers over the air. Synchronisation works both ways, so if you enter an appointment on your phone, it will also be entered into Google Calendar when you press your phone's sync button.

Everyone has to make money, of course, and GooSync does this by offering a premium subscription option which entitles users to, among other things, sync an expanded date range.

I've been using the free version of the software for two weeks and I'm impressed with it. I no longer have to fumble about for my phone's USB cable to sync my diary. I don't have to be at my PC either. I can update my calendar wherever and whenever I want.
