BBM scam tricks South African girls into posing topless

A scammer posing as the head of Ice Model Management is using BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) to trick young South African girls into posing topless and taking nude photos of themselves.

According to a report by the Sunday Times, the scammer is posing as the director of the agency, James Kelly. Reports of a person who claims to be Tanya Botha, and has been linked to the scam, have also surfaced.

The report stated that women between 16-20 have been targeted via BBM, with the promise of modelling contracts.

A 16-year-old Cape Town pupil was a recent target, who invited “ICE Models” on BBM after her friend sent her the contact details. She suspected something was not right when she was asked to send photos of herself in underwear.

Matric pupil Kim Easom was also targeted, but contacted the police and the agency after a “Tanya Botha” invited her on BBM and requested a topless picture.

The real James Kelly has released a statement warning parents that “they need to be cautious of what their children are doing on their phones”.

“We have opened a case with the police, yet not much can be done from our side unless the impersonator is found,” said James.

“Professional modelling agencies would not ask you for nude photos and they would not contact you via BBM or other such methods.”
