Watch out for this new Windows ransomware

Microsoft has issued a warning to Windows users about a new type of ransomware that spreads through removable and network drives.

The ransomware is detected as Ransom:Win32/ZCryptor.A, said Microsoft.

The ransomware is distributed through spam email, other macro malware, or fake installers such as an infected Flash Player setup file.

To recover from and prevent infection, Microsoft offered the following advice:

• Keep Windows and anti-virus software up to date.
• Regularly make backup files in an external hard drive.
• Enable file history or system protection. In your Windows 10 or Windows 8.1 devices, you must have your file history enabled and you have to set up a drive for file history.
• Beware of phishing emails, spam, and clicking malicious attachments.
• Disable the loading of macros in your Office programs.
• Disable your Remote Desktop feature whenever possible.
• Use two-factor authentication.
• Use a safe Internet connection.
• Avoid browsing websites that are known for being malware breeding grounds.
