Linux turns 25
The Linux operating system kernel turns 25 years old on 25 August 2016, with the project having grown immensely over the past two decades.
As reported by Ars Technica, Linus Torvalds posted a message in 1991 announcing the launch of Linux – which was “just a hobby”.
He added that Linux “won’t be big and professional like gnu”.
Today, Linux powers large portions of the Internet’s infrastructure, including data centres, websites, stock exchanges, smartphone operating systems, and supercomputers.
Linux also runs as an operating system on many desktop and laptop PCs across the world.
To mark the occasion, the 25th anniversary version of the Linux Kernel Development Report has been released.
