Apple iOS 4.3 update available

Last night Apple released an update for the operating system (OS) that powers many of their mobile devices, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Media reports suggest that the latest version of Apple’s OS, iOS 4.3, is the first version of the new iOS 4 operating system that no longer supports the iPhone 3G.

According to Apple the update fixes a number of bugs that were in iOS 4.2 and introduces many new features.

Personal Hotspot

A feature that was introduced in version 2.2 of Google’s competing Android operating system was the ability to turn your phone into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

With iOS 4.3 Apple enables iPhone 4 users to share their cellular data connection with up to 5 devices (combination of up to 3 Wi-Fi, 3 Bluetooth, and 1 USB).

iTunes Home Sharing

Play music, movies and TV shows from a shared iTunes library on a Mac or PC (requires iTunes 10.2).

New AirPlay features

The new AirPlay features in iOS 4.3 all require an Apple TV running software version 4.2 or later.

It allows you to play videos from the Photos app including the Camera Roll album, iTunes previews, enabled third-party apps and websites on Apple TV, as well as play slideshows from the Photos app using the transitions available on Apple TV.

Safari web browser improvements

Apple promises a faster Safari performance with Apple Nitro JavaScript engine in the iOS 4.3 update.

HD video out using the Apple Digital AV Adapter

View 720p HD videos from Videos app, iPod app, Photos, YouTube, Safari, Keynote, and enabled third-party apps on an HDMI display.

This requires a new adapter Apple introduced with the iPad 2 which is set to go on sale for $39 in the US Apple Store soon which supports the iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2, and iPod Touch.

Ping features

New features were introduced for Ping, Apple’s social network for music that is built into iTunes, including:

  1. Push notifications for comments and follow requests;
  2. Post and Like songs directly from the Now Playing screen; and
  3. Parental controls

New Settings

Lastly, Apple enabled three new settings in iOS 4.3:

  1. Messages setting for number of times to repeat an alert.
  2. iPad side switch setting to lock screen rotation or mute audio notifications and sound effects.
  3. Single tap conference call dialing with a pause to send a passcode.
