Research in Motion (RIM) launched a beta for the latest version of BlackBerry for Facebook application today.
According to RIM, there are currently well over 30 million monthly active users on Facebook for BlackBerry and approximately 21 million active daily users on Facebook for BlackBerry.
Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones v2.0 has a new look and feel, promises a more integrated mobile Facebook experience. Key features of the app include:
- “Always On” Facebook Chat Notifications
- Redesigned Navigation Grid
- New Notifications Bar
- Improved News Feed Scrolling
- Enhanced Profiles
- Added Publisher Functionality
- Updated User Interface
You can now check to see which of your Facebook friends are online and start a Chat conversation from within the Facebook application or within the unified mailbox on your BlackBerry smartphone, the official announcement by RIM said.
RIM added that as long as your status is set to online you will also still receive notifications even if you are not using the Facebook app.
New Navigation Control
Facebook for BlackBerry has moved from a static navigation bar to a drop-down navigation control which RIM said is scalable so as to support new features in the future.
Borrowing from the BlackBerry 6 OS’ “Today View”, the notifications bar offers an easy way to access your Facebook Notifications, Messages, Friend Requests and Chats from anywhere in the Facebook application.
Improved News Feed
RIM also announced improved News Feed interactions which is to let you scroll through your News Feed without accidentally clicking “Like.”
To interact with posts you need to click the “More” button (+).
Enhanced publisher functionality allows you post photos to your Wall, add an update, or check in to a Facebook Place from the News Feed.
New Profile UI and Profile Information Viewing
The new Profile UI now provides Wall, Info, and Photo tabs. New to v2.0 is the ability to view key information on Profiles and Pages, such as contact info, basic info like birthdays, hometown and relationship status, and likes and interests.
BlackBerry users interested in testing the new Facebook for BlackBerry 2.0 beta were able to sign up in the BlackBerry Beta Zone from this morning.
RIM said that it was an early preview, however, so only a limited number of beta spots were available.
