BlackBerry Protect security software now available in SA

Research in Motion (RIM), the makers of BlackBerry smartphones, recently announced that publicly available beta versions of BlackBerry Protect are now available to South African BlackBerry users.

BlackBerry Protect is a free application that allows users to wirelessly backup, restore and locate their BlackBerry smartphone.

In the event that a user’s BlackBerry smartphone is misplaced, lost or stolen, BlackBerry Protect provides features like: remote device wipe, remote device lock, ‘Lost and Found’ screen, locate device on a map, remote activation of the BlackBerry smartphone loud ringer, and wireless device backup and restore.

Remote device management

BlackBerry Protect includes the following remote device management features:

  1. Remote wipe
  2. Remote lock and ‘Lost and Found’ screen
  3. Remote activate loud ringer
  4. Cell Tower and GPS device tracking

Over the Air (OTA) backup and restore

The following OTA backup and restore features are also available:

  1. Contacts and Calendar
  2. Memos and Tasks
  3. Browser Bookmarks
  4. Text Messages

BlackBerry Protect also has administrative features based on the BlackBerry ID system which includes a web-based end user portal and operator call centre access.

African countries that can now access BlackBerry Protect include Algeria, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia.
