DeepMind’s first international AI research office has opened in Edmonton, Canada, in collaboration with the University of Alberta.
Founded in London in 2012, DeepMind uses learning algorithms for applications such as simulations, eCommerce, and games.
Google acquired DeepMind in January 2014 from its founders Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman.
The company said it was a big decision for it to open its first non-UK research lab, but was made easier thanks to the University of Alberta.
The company has sponsored the university’s machine learning lab to provide additional funding for PhDs.
DeepMind Alberta will be led by Rich Sutton, Michael Bowling, and Patrick Pilarski.
