iOS 11 is going to be awesome – These are the iPhones and iPads which support it

iOS 11 – the next operating system for Apple’s mobile devices – is set to be released in Q3 2017.

The new OS has been described by Apple as “a giant step for the iPhone, a monumental leap for the iPad”.

Users who want to try iOS 11 before it goes public can do so via its beta programme – although this is expected to include bugs.

With the OS set to launch in the coming weeks, we have detailed its new features and supported devices, below.

New features

Apple has punted several new features of iOS 11 as standout upgrades, including:

iOS 11 – iPad-only Features

  • Files – Browse, search, and organise files across devices and services.
  • Dock – Browse between apps and receive suggested apps to open.
  • Multitasking – Open two apps and view both in Split View, or move an app to Slide Over.
  • Drag and Drop – Move text, photos, and files from one app to another.
  • Instant notes – Use the Apple Pencil to take notes from the lock screen.
  • Document scanner – Scan a document and fill it in with the Apple Pencil.

iOS 11 – All Features

  • ARKit – Brings augmented reality to iOS devices.
  • Live Photos – Loop, Bounce, and Long Exposure functionality added.
  • Camera – New professional-grade camera filters.
  • App Store – An upgraded App Store with a new interface.
  • Messages – An improved Messages app with a new drawer.
  • Siri – Siri has been upgraded to be “smarter and more helpful”, and includes translation and Apple Music functionality.
  • AirPlay 2 – Improved AirPlay functionality.
  • Control Centre – A new Control Centre lets users customise what commands they can access.
  • Lock Screen – An upgraded lock screen with more notification support.
  • Do Not Disturb – Automatically prevents calls/messages from coming through while driving.
  • Maps – Support for indoor maps of major airports and shopping centres.
  • QuickType keyboard – Activate the keyboard for one-handed typing.
