Microsoft has become a Premium Sponsor of the Open Source Initiative (OSI).
The OSI stated that this was a “significant milestone for it and the open source software movement more broadly”.
“I don’t think there could be any greater testament to the maturity, viability, interest, and success of open source software than not only Microsoft’s recognition, but also their support as a sponsor,” it said.
The OSI added that Microsoft is a leading contributor to open source projects hosted on GitHub.
The news follows an announcement by Canonical that it and Microsoft’s Azure team had enabled a new Azure-tailored Ubuntu kernel in the Ubuntu Cloud Images for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on Azure.
