Amazon Appstore for Android in SA
Summary: Amazon’s Appstore for Android devices is becoming available outside the United States, and has been confirmed to be working in South Africa.
The Amazon Appstore for Android, previously only available in the United States, has started making its apps available to international users according to user reports from around the world.
According to a post by Android Police citing The Digital Reader, Amazon seems to have made the apps in its store available to the rest of the world on the sly.
On top of that, Android Police reported that Amazon provided the following comment when asked about the apparent launch: “Thanks for reaching out. We have not announced any plans for international expansion.”
The Amazon Appstore for Android page still says that the Appstore is available only to its customers in the US.
However, we were able to download the application for the Amazon Appstore and download and run both the free app for the day, as well as purchase a paid-for app from South Africa.
We could also verify that devices running the Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3), and Honeycomb (3.2) versions of Android were able to download and install apps from the Amazon Appstore in SA.
Though Amazon may be playing coy on this, it seems as though non-US customers may finally have cracked the nod.
Update: It seems as though Amazon turned its region locking back on some time during the night. Whether this was a preview of coming attractions or a slip-up on the online retailer’s part remains to be seen.
