Another Office alternative
One of the first widely-used office suites on PCs was Wordperfect. Then Microsoft muscled into the game and quickly its Office suite became the de-facto standard, edging out competitors.
Although down, Wordperfect never completely disappeared and now Corel’s office suite makes its play for desktop mind share with the release of Wordperfect Office X4 (WPO X4).
This time around WPO X4 is pushing deep PDF integration as one of its key selling points. To date Microsoft Office has had limited PDF capabilities although OpenOffice.org has always had better PDF support.
WPO X4 includes a range of PDF capabilities including the ability to import, edit and export PDF documents – including scanned PDFs.
WPO X4 is distributed in South Africa by Workgroup. Corel product manager at Workgroup, Kevin George, says that as well as offering good PDF support, WPO X4 is also compatible with Microsoft Office 2007 files as well as Open Document Format (ODF), used by OpenOffice.org.
"WPO X4 builds on the strengths of WordPerfect, adding more PDF capabilities, more Microsoft Office compatibility and new tools for collaboration, digital note taking and business intelligence," says George.
The Wordperfect suite includes the Wordperfect word processor, Quattro Pro spreadsheet, Presentations slide show and Wordperfect Mail application.
"This release also features additions including Corel Connector online services, WordPerfect Lightning for digital note taking and Corel Visual Intelligence SE for data visualisation and business intelligence," says George.
