Google killing Play Movies & TV app

Google is shutting down its Play Movies & TV app on Android TV and the web, the company announced in a recent community support post.

The service has become the latest of the tech giant’s many decommissioned or cancelled projects, some of which are recorded in the infamous Google Graveyard.

However, Google will continue to offer digital movie and series purchases and renting services through alternative channels.

Users will also retain any titles they bought on the old service.

From 17 January 2023, previously purchased movies and series will be available under the “Shop” tab on Android TV or Google TV devices, as well as in the Google TV mobile app and on YouTube.

Users with TVs and streaming devices powered by Android TV will find their bought or actively rented titles under the “Library” section of the “Shop” tab.

The new tab will also support buying and renting new movies and shows.

On set-top boxes with Android TV, the content will be available in the YouTube app.

To access Google’s digital movie and show catalogue on a browser will also require using YouTube.

Google said the changes would roll out over the “next few” weeks, with precise timing varying by location and country.

That implies that the switchover to the new platforms could happen sooner than the official migration date.
