Software piracy

Software piracy in Montenegro is amongst the highest in the world with 83% of computer programmes illegally copied in 2007, a study released on Thursday showed.

Montenegro’s economy has lost about seven million dollars in 2007 due to unpaid taxes on software sales, said a study done by Business Software Alliance, an industry group.

The scale of the problem is such that Montenegro ranks among 20 countries with highest illegal software rates in the world.

Oliver Obradovic of Microsoft Montenegro said "most of the government departments, financial institutions and big companies have installed licenced software" since 2005, when anti-piracy legislation was put in place.

"Small businesses and individuals present the biggest problem," he noted.

Software piracy remains widespread throughout the Balkans, aggravated in part by the relatively high price of registered software, observers say.
