Global company acquiring South African software developer
The Competition Commission has approved a proposed transaction where Datamine Africa intends to acquire Mineware Africa and Mineware Consulting, with conditions.
Datamine Africa is the regional arm of Datamine, a global provider of technology and software solutions across the entire mining value chain.
Headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, Datamine Africa provides specialised software and consulting services to mining operations across the continent.
It is a subsidiary of Vela Software, an operating division of Constellation Software, one of the world’s largest and most successful software conglomerates.
The Competition Commission said that in South Africa, Datamine (through Vela) is active across several industries, including mining and healthcare.
Mineware is a South African software development and consulting firm specializing in operational mine management systems.
Its products and services focus on the day-to-day execution of mining, including tracking production, ensuring safety compliance, and a sampling module for better ore management.
Founded in 1996 by Paul Saker, the company is headquartered in Johannesburg near Lanseria with an R&D hub in Stellenbosch. Saker has retired, and his son, Ian, has taken over management of the company.
Its flagship product is the Syncromine Core mine management software suite, which is customised to clients’ needs and offers several functions in a combined interface.
In addition, Mineware offers ongoing support and maintenance to ensure the continued performance and reliability of its systems.
“The Commission is of the view that the proposed transaction is unlikely to substantially lessen or prevent competition in any market,” the Competition Commission stated.
To address public interest concerns, the Commission imposed conditions on the transaction, with Datamine and Mineware undertaking to support South Africa’s transformation goals.
Over a three-year period, the companies have committed to support the promotion and development of historically disadvantaged people, workers and small and medium enterprises.
