Windows Server 2008 Foundation launched
Microsoft recently launched its Windows Server 2008 Foundation, aiming to “put the power of server technology within reach of the small- and micro-business market with a simple, low-cost server solution for companies with 15 or fewer users.”
Windows Server 2008 Foundation will be available preinstalled on servers from the local arms of Dell, HP, and IBM, as well as the Mecer and Proline range from Mustek and Pinnacle.
“It will help small companies to run business applications and databases, host Web sites, and provide basic server functionality such as file and print sharing and remote access,” Microsoft said.
Sandie Overtveld, head of the business and marketing group at Microsoft South Africa, said the solution will bring big-business benefits to the thousands of small companies using desktop machines as servers — as well as those who have previously been unable to afford servers.
“While extremely diverse, small businesses have been able tell us what their primary needs are,” he explained.
“They want to protect their critical business infrastructure and data. They want to enhance their business productivity and improve their decision making. They want access to their data regardless of location or device. And they want to increase their revenue and marketplace awareness. Many times this is helping the SMB to achieve professional image.
“This is where server technology can be critical. And it’s no longer a luxury that can be enjoyed only by large companies with IT budgets to match.”
