BlackBerry announced the launch of the BBM Channels beta, “a forum for active, real conversations between people, brands and communities”, in a press release on Wednesday, 27 November 2013.

The new feature is being made available to users on devices running BlackBerry OS 5 and above, and BlackBerry 10.

BBM Channels for iPhone and Android devices will launch “in the coming months”, BlackBerry said.

According to the smartphone maker, existing BlackBerry users can simply update the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) application through BlackBerry World.

BlackBerry mentioned two channels as examples of the type of content available on the platform: the Maple Leafs in Toronto, Canada; and PriceCheck in South Africa.

“Through PriceCheck’s BBM Channel bargain hunters can stay up to date on featured offers and competitions,” BlackBerry said. “Customers can also engage by sharing online shopping tips and great bargains.”
