Using information as an asset

IBM’s Smarter Planet business model will be “bigger than ERP and CRM combined” believes General Manager for IBM Information Management Group, Ambuj Goyal.

During the company’s recent Information On Demand conference Goyal expanded on the company’s current viewpoint with regards to data management and how information is processed.

Although more than 15 petabytes of information is being created daily, Goyal believes that the data is not being processed and used as efficiently as it should. The Smarter Planet business model intends to drive better utilisation of existing resources and data so as to make business processes and everyday tasks more efficient.

A primary example of this lies in Stockholm, where IBM recently collected and assessed traffic congestion data in and around the city. Through better use of the information the team was able to reduce congestion during peak hours by 18% without implementing new infrastructure.

This example, believes Goyal, is the future of modern business functions. Predictive analytics, as IBM refers to it, will play a significant role in how IT professionals implement solutions in the future.

When asked why IBM had suddenly chosen to adopt this new direction Goyal revealed that “Some company had to take the lead, the problem has always been that there has been no real methodology [in how data was analysed]. The reason it continues to grow now is because everybody’s asking for it, in the last five years IBM has made an investment of $20 billion in this strategy”.

Although the uptake of this new strategy has so far been slow (only 1,000 of IBMs 15,000 clients are currently adopting the ‘information led transformation journey’) this number is steadily increasing as customers begin to implement new infrastructure, software and services.

“These are people who are helping us to take the business to the next step,” says Goyal, “the point is that we’re trying to get every customer to start thinking about this process to systematically use information as an asset. It’s a journey.”
