Telkom Direct shop hit in armed robbery

The Telkom Direct shop in Centurion Mall was hit by a group of 7 armed robbers on the evening of Tuesday, 15 July 2014.

In statements given to police and the armed response company, the shop staff said the thieves carried small bags which they filled with cellphones from the shop’s store rooms.

Security personnel, who did not wish to be identified, said that mall security responded to the shop’s panic button being pressed, but the first guard on the scene was threatened with a gun before he could confirm that an armed robbery was in progress.

A second guard was able to confirm the robbery before he too was held at gunpoint in the Telkom Direct store.

Chubb responded to the panic button within 3 minutes of the store staff pressing it, but by then the robbers had made their getaway in a BMW and Hyundai.

No-one was injured during the theft.

New stock for the shop had arrived that morning, and security personnel said this was the second such robbery in less than two months.

It is understood that such armed robberies of operator stores have become a tremendous problem of late, and operators have banded together with the police to catch the criminals that attack their shops.
