Ster-Kinekor increased its movie ticket prices in May 2014, bringing the cost of 2D movies at its more expensive “Classic” complexes to R62 per ticket.
When asked about the hike, Ster-Kinekor explained that an annual price increase is normal for most companies operating within the entertainment and service industry sectors.
“Ticket prices vary across Ster-Kinekor’s sites, and thus the price increase also varies from site to site,” the cineplex operator added.
Most of Ster-Kinekor’s cinema multiplexes are split into two broad categories: Classic-type, and Junction-type complexes.
Examples of Classic theatres include Brooklyn, Fourways, Gateway (Durban), Irene, Kolonnade, Sandton, and The Zone (Rosebank). Tickets for 2D movies cost R62, while a 3D ticket will set you back R79.
Junction complexes may be found in Carnival City, Centurion, Newtown, Motlasana Mall (near Klerksdorp), and Mimosa Mall (Bloemfontein). A 2D movie costs R50, while a 3D ticket is priced at R66.
In addition to these two main categories, Ster-Kinekor also operates a number of lower-cost theatre complexes with prices as low as R21 (2D) and R32 (3D) at Sterland in Pretoria.
Finding historical data for all of Ster-Kinekor’s pricing tiers proved to be problematic, so the graph below only takes a look at three of the main types of tickets it sells.
Data about Ster-Kinekor’s movie ticket prices were cobbled together from various online sources, and there are a few gaps and rounded prices in the data set.
Ster-Kinekor was provided with a table of the data we compiled and asked for feedback, but the company had not responded at the time of publication.
As such, the graph above, and comparison to the consumer price index below, should be seen as indicative and not an authoritative representation of movie prices over the past 10 years.
The table below compares the percentage increase of the prices we were able to find to the consumer price index (CPI) from the previous year.
|Percentage increase year-on-year|
|Year||CPI (previous year)||Ster-Kinekor Junction 2D||Ster-Kinekor Classic 2D||Ster-Kinekor Classic 3D|
|A 0% increase means prices didn’t change from one year to the next, while N/A means that ticket price data was not available for that year.|
It’s worth noting that the CPI percentages above were derived from Statistics South Africa’s (Stats SA’s) rebased index.
In January 2009, Stats SA changed the naming and composition of headline CPI measures. The weighting of items in the basket were also changed, with certain items excluded and new items introduced, and a broader range of prices were collected for individual items.
This means that some of the CPI figures published prior to 2009 differ from the new CPI percentages calculated, though a quick comparison of the numbers suggests that the differences are usually fractions of a percentage point.
Update: Ster-Kinekor has asked us to highlight that it no longer refers to its cinemas as “Classic” and “Junction” and hasn’t for at least the last two years. Our use of the terms above was just as a useful way to refer to the two different price tiers based on Ster-Kinekor’s historical classification, and should not be taken to mean that the cinema chain now refers to its cineplexes by those names.
