Easiest and most difficult matric subjects

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced on Monday 5 January 2015 that the 2014 matric pass rate was 75.8%. What Motshekga did not mention was the quality of these passes.

Only 42% of full-time matric learners took Mathematics, while only 31% took Physical Sciences.

Mathematics and Physical Sciences are a requirement for many important fields of study, including engineering.

However, looking at the pass rates of these two subjects it is not difficult to see why learners opt not to study them.

Mathematics had the worst pass rate of all subjects at 53.5%, followed by Physical Sciences at 61.5%.

The subject with the highest pass rate was Dance Studies at 99.8%, followed by Life Orientation at 99.6%, and Agricultural Technology at 99.3%.
