Pay TV competition here in May?

Speculation has arisen that incoming pay-TV operator On Digital Media (ODM) is planning to launch commercial services in May. This comes after The Times reported that ODM is gearing up to take on market leader MultiChoice later this year.

Despite these reports ODM spokesperson Elouise Kelly said that the company could not confirm the launch date just yet.

ODM has however called a media briefing for Thursday during which company CEO Vino Govender and his team will “reveal future plans for the company as well as [announce] the most exciting development to happen in the television sphere”.

This suggests that ODM may indeed be poised to announce further details behind its commercial offering this week.

ODM has confirmed that pricing of their pay-TV packages will range between R99 per month and R249 per month.  This is a downward adjustment from their previously planned pricing models which ranged from R149 to R349 a month depending on the choice of channels selected by the subscriber.

According to the current online Subscriber Information Form new subscribers will have the following choice of content:  Movies, Series, Documentary, Children, Music, Religion, News, Sport and Local Content.

ODM subscribers will be able to use an existing DStv dish for the service, but will need a new decoder.  The decoder will be manufactured by Altech UEC, the same manufacturer which MultiChoice used for their recently released HD PVR decoder.

One of the biggest questions which has been circulating around the launch of ODM is the possibility of sports broadcasting. Govender however told The Times that he does not believe a lack of sports coverage will hurt ODM adding that “we are not entirely a sports-mad country”.
