Movie prices in South Africa: Ster-Kinekor vs Nu Metro

Nu Metro and Ster-Kinekor recently adjusted the ticket prices at their cinema complexes around South Africa.

For the most part, these adjustments were all increases – though Nu Metro did manage to keep its prices the same at Mountain Mill, and its Scene Xtreme cinemas.

Ster Kinekor’s price increases varied between 5% and 16% depending on location, while Nu Metro’s increases were between 0% and 10.5%.

To see whether one chain charges more than the other, we compared ticket prices across the various pricing tiers they offer.

Nu Metro has 4 different pricing tiers (5 if you count The Pantheon separately), while Ster-Kinekor’s cinemas are segmented into 10 different tiers.

Each of these tiers then have different prices for 2D and 3D movies.

To construct a meaningful comparison, we grouped these pricing categories into 3 tiers, and compared the prices of Ster-Kinekor’s Cine Prestige and Nu Metro’s Scene VIP lounge cinemas.

This is summarised in the table below.
