Another cellphone store robbed in Durban
A case of business robbery is being investigated after another Durban cellphone store was robbed on Wednesday night, police said on Thursday.
The store situated inside the Berea Shopping Centre was robbed by four unknown men at about 21:30, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said.
The men accosted a security guard who was on duty at the time and assaulted him with a crowbar.
The suspects instructed him to open the store’s door. When they realised that the door was not opening, they smashed the glass door with a hammer, Zwane said.
“A case of business robbery was opened at Umbilo police station for investigation,” he added.
The gang managed to get away with all of the store’s cellphone stock and fled in a blue vehicle, which was parked in Berea Road, said Andreas Mathios, Blue Security spokesperson.
Several cellphone stores situated at KwaZulu-Natal shopping centres were targeted by armed gangs last month, including in Umhlanga and Westville.
On May 17, a video of two luxury cars allegedly used as getaway vehicles, after a cellphone store robbery in Umhlanga, surfaced on social media.
It surfaced shortly after a Vodacom store on Zenith Drive was robbed by armed men, who used a grey Mercedes Benz and a white Audi to get away.
