Telkom was founded on 1 October 1991, when the Department of Posts and Telecommunications was divided in three:

• Telkom SA

Telkom was the only fixed-line provider in SA until Neotel was launched on 31 August 2006.

Its copper-based telephony and DSL services were its cornerstone, and it now has a wide catalogue of telecoms products in the consumer, business, and enterprise market.
