Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket will carry a Tesla Roadster as its payload for its first flight.
SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy is a large rocket which is able to launch payloads further into space than any previous generation of SpaceX boosters.
Musk tweeted that he plans to launch his own midnight cherry Tesla Roadster into Mars orbit while the vehicle plays Space Oddity by David Bowie.
Speaking to The Verge, Musk confirmed that his roadster would be the payload for the first launch of the Falcon Heavy.
The SpaceX CEO previously stated that the payload for the Falcon Heavy’s first flight would be the “silliest thing we can imagine”.
Payload will be my midnight cherry Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity. Destination is Mars orbit. Will be in deep space for a billion years or so if it doesn’t blow up on ascent.
