Apple wants to do away with printer drivers

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has published two patent applications filed by Apple on September 14, 2010, that aim to do away with printer drivers.

The first patent includes various ways to avoid traditional print drivers, such as a “driverless printing technique” which would access all the information required off the printer itself. Another method is similar to Google’s cloud print, where Apple servers in the cloud would generate the required print data.

The second patent application details a new “document format key”, which would provide all the necessary configuration settings including resolution, orientation and duplex support.
