Mozilla developer Gervase Markham has confirmed that 531 fraudulent secure socket layer (SSL) certificates were issued by Dutch issuing firm DigiNotar.
Domains affected by the fraudulent certificates include those used by the CIA, MI6, Mossad, Microsoft, Yahoo, Skype, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft’s Windows Update service.
DigiNotar admitted its systems were hacked in July 2011 after reports of fraudulent Google SSL certificates appeared online.
As a result of the leaked certificates, Firefox developer Mozilla will be permanently removing support for all certificates issued by DigiNotar, with Google taking similar action in its Chrome web browser.
