Google News gets ‘Featured’ label
News organisations can now add “standout” metadata tags to the coding of special stories such as scoops, exclusives or unique breaking news.
Google News will take the “standout” tags along with an analysis of the article’s content into account before deciding whether stories are awarded the Featured tag in the Google news stream.
A Google representative told the Associated Press (AP) that a tagged story could appear on the Google news stream for longer than it normally would, however if a news organisation tags more than seven stories in a week, the algorithm used to analyse the data would become suspicious and give the tags less weight, or discount them completely.
Competing news agencies are also able to tag stories as worthy of the Featured label. “The way we’ve designed standout is that when it’s used both ways – for calling out their own work and calling out the work of others – that builds our trust in that source,” a Google representative told the AP.
