Intel drops support for MeeGo
Intel has decided to shift its weight behind the newly announced “Tizen” mobile operating system, the latest software to come out of the Linux Foundation.
Intel dropping support for MeeGo is in line with earlier reports that the company was looking to shift focus away from the mobile OS due to a lack of consumer enthusiasm.
The Nokia N9 smartphone, which runs on the MeeGo platform, was released this month worldwide, though this will be the last MeeGo based device from the company as they shift their focus over to the Windows Phone OS.
According to an Intel blog post, “We believe the future belongs to HTML5-based applications, outside of a relatively small percentage of apps, and we are firmly convinced that our investment needs to shift toward HTML5.”
“Shifting to HTML5 doesn’t just mean slapping a web runtime on an existing Linux, even one aimed at mobile, as MeeGo has been,” the company concluded.
Tizen will support smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smart TVs and in-vehicle systems.
