Dropbox turn down Apple buyout offer
According to a report by Forbes, the founders of file sharing service Dropbox turned down a 9 figure acquisition offer from Apple in 2009, with rumours suggesting the offer was as high as $800 million (R6.39 billion).
Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi apparently met with Steve Jobs in Cupertino in 2009, who reportedly offered to acquire the company noting that it was, “a feature, not a product.”
The deal falling through, Apple went on to develop their own file sharing service called iCloud, which provided similar features to Dropbox, along with contact syncing, calendar entries and media control across iOS devices.
In the meantime, Dropbox is currently engaged with deals from the likes of HTC corp, which would see the company provide file sharing facilities on all future HTC smartphones.
