Apple planning solar farm
After building a 500,000-square-foot monster data centre in Maiden, N.C. known as project dolphin – Apple is reportedly working on a solar farm located nearby the facility to provide the bulk of the power required.
Having spent a reported $1 billion on the data centre already, Apple is now busy reshaping slopes of 171 acres of vacant land near the data centre – according to permits issued by Catawba County authorities.
The vacant land will house the solar farm, according to reports by the Charlotte Observer.
Apple representatives did not respond to requests for comment, so no confirmation is available as yet.
The Cupertino-based tech giant has shown interest in renewable energy sources over the last few years, and according to the company’s facilities report for 2011, Apple facilities in Austin, Texas, Elk Grove, California, and Cork, Ireland are powered by 100 percent renewable energy resources.
