China becomes largest smartphone market
According to research from Strategy Analytics, China has overtaken the United States to become the world’s largest smartphone market by volume.
China sold 23.9 million smartphone units in Q3 2011, marginally ahead of the 23.3 million units sold in the United States.
China’s smartphone shipments also grew by 58 percent when compared with Q2 2011.
“China’s rapid growth has been driven by an increasing availability of smartphones in retail channels, aggressive subsidizing by operators of high-end models like the Apple iPhone, and an emerging wave of low-cost Android models from local Chinese brands such as ZTE,” according to Tom Kang, a director at Strategy Analytcs.
The research also named the two top vendors in each market, showing that HTC and Apple dominate the U.S market with 24 percent and 20.6 percent respectively. Nokia and Samsung were the winners in the Chinese market, accounting for 28.5 percent and 17.6 percent respectively.
