Intel shows off prototype smartphones and tablet PCs
Technology Review has had some hands on times with smartphones and tablet PCs based on the new Intel Medfield architecture, Intel’s latest mobile offering.
“We expect products based on these to be announced in the first half of 2012,” said Stephen Smith, vice president of Intel’s Architecture group.
The current prototypes are known as reference designs, and will be sent out to manufacturers to serve as a guideline for building mobile phones based on Intel’s technology. “They [manufacturers] can use as much or as little of the reference design as they like,” said Smith, who also hinted that Intel devices may make an appearance at the CES 2012 electronics show.
The prototype devices were running the Gingerbread version of Google’s Android operating system, and were reportedly able to play Blu-ray quality video without a hitch.
Smith also noted that Intel has built circuits into the Medfield chip specifically to speed up Android apps and Web browsing.
