Sony shows off paper-powered battery
At an eco-products exhibition in Tokyo, Sony has demonstrated a bio-battery prototype that is powered by shredding paper.
In the demonstration, pieces of paper and cardboard were placed in a water mixture to turn on a small fan.
The demo works in a similar fashion to the way termites and white ants digest wood and convert it into energy.
Sony made use of an enzyme known as cellulose in the water mixture to break down the paper to glucose sugar. The sugar is then processed by other enzymes, and oxygen which converts it to hydrogen ions and electrons, powering the battery.
While the battery isn’t as powerful as older technology on the market, it can power a small MP3 player according to Sony, who has experimented with sugar powered batteries since 2007.
