Google released the latest statistics on software versions of the Android operating system currently available.

The statistics, released on Wednesday 4 January, detail the percentage of Android-powered phones powered by each version of the operating system, with Ice Cream Sandwich appearing on the list for the first time.

The various revisions of Ice Cream Sandwich, found on handsets like the Galaxy Nexus (running ICS 4.0.2) and Galaxy Nexus S (which is in the process of getting upgraded to ICS 4.0.3) accounted for a total 0.6 percent of all Android devices so far.

The most popular version of Android currently is Gingerbread, the second to latest version of the mobile OS for smartphones. The Gingerbread market share sat at 55.5 percent of Android devices, a clear lead over second place Froyo (30.4 percent) and third place Eclair (8.5 percent.)

Honeycomb, the version of Android found on most tablet devices accounted for just 3.3 percent of devices.

The remaining 1.7 percent was shared by Android 1.6 (Donut) which held 1.1 percent, and Android 1.5 (Cupcake) which held 0.6 percent.
