New technology for roads
Roads and Transport MEC Thobile Mhlahlo told the Bhisho legislature on Thursday that the objective was to have 80% of the provincial network surfaced. Currently, 5102km of the network are surfaced and 38363km are gravel.
“We have embraced a concept called alternative surfacing technologies which is cost-effective and seeks to stabilise regravelled roads and then seal the sub-base. In this way our roads will be better preserved,” Mhlahlo said.
The department‘s in-house roads construction and maintenance units had already begun identifying possible roads for surfacing.
In certain areas they had already begun work after consultation with municipalities and transport forums.
One of the first projects, said Mhlahlo, was the 3,2km road from the entrance of the Bhisho Airport to the police air wing site at the back of the airport.
