Google joins SOPA protest

Google is the latest in a host of large websites, which include online community Reddit and free encyclopaedia Wikipedia, who will protest on January 18 against the Stop Online Piracy Act.

While the other larger sites will black out their websites for a set period of time, Google will make its opposition to the Act clear by raising awareness using the Google search engine homepage.

A Google representative commented, “Like many businesses, entrepreneurs, and Web users, we oppose these bills because there are smart, targeted ways to shut down foreign rogue Web sites without asking American companies to censor the Internet. So tomorrow we will be joining many other tech companies to highlight this issue on our U.S. homepage.”

Google will not replace the company’s logo in protest, but will post a link on its homepage to more information about opposition to SOPA.

Google’s homepage is the most visited web page in the world.
