Thunderbolt comes to Ultrabooks in 2012
Acer, Asus and Lenovo are among a group of Ultrabook manufacturers that will add Thunderbolt I/O ports to their devices in 2012 according to a report by Digitimes.
Thunderbolt was developed by Intel, and combines DisplayPort and PCI Express technologies to provide a versatile I/O port that can be used to connect a range of devices, including monitors and external hard drives.
Digitimes notes that the cost of adding Thunderbolt connectivity to a computer is around $20 (R159.10) which means it will only appear on high end devices for the time being.
Apple was one of the first companies to adopt Thunderbolt technology, and currently equips a range of computer and screens with the port.
There are also indications from a recent patent filing that Apple may begin using Thunderbolt in iOS devices.
