Smartphone auto-correct mistake shuts down school

Cellphones

Lanier Technical College in Georgia, United States, was placed on lockdown after an auto-correct error indicated that the school would be under threat by an unknown gunman.

A student was casually texting the message, “Gunna be at West Hall this afternoon” when the smartphone they were using auto-corrected the word “Gunna” to “Gunman”.

To make things worse, the text was sent to the incorrect number. The concerned recipient of the message decided it was best to contact authorities, who took the “threat” seriously and placed the school on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

A school spokesman noted that while the event caused a great deal of anxiety to students, staff and parents, they always take threats seriously.

The incident happens just days after a school shooting in Ohio left three students dead and two wounded, after a 17-year-old gunman went on a shooting spree.
