Google Chrome suffers major exploit at Pwnium
It took just five minutes for a Russian university student to hack into a secure Windows 7 machine using a remote code execution exploit in Google’s Chrome web browser.
Sergey Glazunov demonstrated the exploit at the Pwnium hacker contest, and won $60,000 for his efforts.
Google has offered a total of $1 million in prize money to hackers who can exploit the company’s Chrome web browser.
Commenting on the exploit, a member of the Chrome security team Justin Schuh said, “It didn’t break out of the sandbox [but] it avoided the sandbox. It was an impressive exploit. It required a deep understanding of how Chrome works. This is not a trivial thing to do.”
Google’s Chrome browser was hacked for the first time in 4 years at the Pwnium and Pwn2Own contests, where companies offer prize money to users who can demonstrate successful hacks of web browsers.
