Twitter turns 6 years old
Social media service Twitter turned 6 on Wednesday (21 March), and celebrated by releasing up-to-date user statistics.
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey launched the service with his first post on 21 March 2008, saying “just setting up my Twttr.”
The service grew rapidly and now boasts a user base of 532 million accounts.
Used for everything from sharing mundane details of everyday life, to organising mass protests and revolutions, the service now plays a key role in the way information is shared on the internet.
The company announced on its blog that it is now home to over 140 million active users who post an average of 340 million tweets per day.
This is marginally down from the 350 million daily tweets posted shortly after Twitter’s 5th birthday.
