Microsoft takes on Zeus botnets
A group including Microsoft, financial service institutions and U.S. Marshals seized command and control servers in two separate states in an attempt to take down the Zeus botnet.
The Zeus malware is estimated to have infected over 13 million computers. It allows hackers to log keystrokes on the machine, giving them access to password protected services such as internet banking.
The command-and-control computers seized in the operation run the botnet network, and interact with the Zeus malware.
“Some of the worst known Zeus botnets were disrupted by Microsoft and our partners worldwide,” the company said in a statement over the weekend.
Microsoft and its affiliates filed court papers allowing them to seize the computers and filed a suit against 39 defendants. Some of the nicknames used by the defendants include: Slavik, zebra7753, iceIX, Veggi Roma, susanneon, JabberZeus Crew, and h4x0rdz.
