Android, Apple to dominate PCs by 2016
Traditional desktop PCs will see a sharp decline by 2016, while devices based on the Android and Apple iOS systems will continue to gain market share.
This is according the research firm IDC, who note there will be a “dramatic shift” in the computing market between 2011 and 2016.
The “once-dominant” x86 Windows-based PC will drop from 35.9 percent market share in 2011, to 25.1 percent market share in 2016.
Android devices will grow from 29.4 percent share in 2011 to 31.1 percent in 2016, while iOS devices will go from 14.6 percent to 17.3 percent over the same period.
Unit shipments for “smart, connected” devices such as smartphones and tablets are expected to top 1.1 billion this year. By 2016, that number will jump to 1.84 billion units, which is more than double the 2011 figure.
