Iran to cut off Internet
Iran wants to cut countrywide access to the internet and set up its own “clean” local-only intranet.
This is according to the Iranian minister for Information and Communications Technology Reza Taghipour.
“All Internet Service Providers (ISP) should only present national internet by August,” Taghipour said in the statement.
Web giants Google, Hotmail and Yahoo will be blocked, and replaced with government-controlled services including Iran Mail and Iran Search Engine.
The government has reportedly begun a registration process for those interested in using the Iran Mail service, which will verify and record a user’s full name and physical address.
Iran has previously blocked country access to the internet. The latest block prevented users from accessing encrypted sites outside of the country that operate on the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol.
