Apple has released an integrated tool to remove the Flashback malware from over 600,000 infected Mac systems.

The tool became available as part of a security update to Java, two days after Apple announced it was working on a way to remove the information-stealing malware.

Flashback is designed to steal passwords and other information from Mac users through their web browser or other applications. The malware masquerades as an update to Adobe Flash, tricking users into downloading and installing it.

Apple claims that the removal tool gets rid of “the most common variants” of the malware, as well as disabling automatic execution of Java applets on web pages.

Russian antivirus company Dr Web discovered the malware earlier this month, with other security firms such as Kaspersky and Symantec verifying how widespread the infections are.
